Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist for Local Businesses

By · Published

Your Google Business Profile helps nearby customers see what you do, when you are available, and how to contact you. A complete profile cannot guarantee rankings, but it gives Google and customers better information to work with.

Use the real business name

Enter the name customers know and that appears on your website and business materials. Do not add extra services or city names unless they are genuinely part of the business name.

Choose the most accurate primary category

The primary category should describe the main business, not every possible service. Add relevant secondary categories only when the company actually provides those services.

Complete the contact and service information

  • Use the correct phone number and website.
  • Set accurate regular and holiday hours.
  • Define the real service area if customers are served at their locations.
  • Add the services customers can actually purchase.
  • Use the appointment link when booking is available.

Write for customers

The business description should clearly explain the services, audience, and area served. Avoid links, promotions, repeated keywords, and claims that cannot be supported.

Add useful, current photos

Show the people, work, products, space, and customer experience. Real photos help customers understand the business better than generic stock images. Add new photos when the team, location, or services change.

Build a consistent review process

Ask satisfied customers for an honest review using a direct link. Respond professionally and do not buy reviews or offer rewards that could make them less trustworthy.

Check the profile regularly

Google or users can suggest edits. Review the profile for unexpected changes, unanswered questions, new reviews, and outdated information. Make sure the website and profile continue to agree.

The website should support the listing with clear services, location information, and consistent contact details. See our local SEO service for St. Louis businesses for help connecting those pieces.
